The Survey of Family Planning and Maternal Child Health Status in Rural Korea

Abstract
This survey is supported by sevice research grant from the World Health Organization. (WHO) through its special program of Research in Human ¢¥Reproduction_
Field survey was undertaken from 15 July 1981 to 10 August 1981 in selected townships of Seosan county, Korea. In this sample survey, 2,484 eligible women were interviewed to, obtain the pregnancy history -and KAP(:Knowledge Attitude & Practice) on Family Planning and MCH care,
The salient results were -asfollows;
1. Total population sampled _for this ;survey has an age structure similar to the national rural population. However, this sample population has lower rate of crude birth rate-(20. 6 vs 29.0), and higher rate of crude death rate(8.8 vs 5.0), total fertility rate(4. ft vs 3.2) than the national average.
2. 59% ¢¥of eligible women are practicing F.P. however, 50% of these women are using ineffective methods(condom, coitus interruption, rhythm etc), 20% of them are using effective tnethod(IUD, oral and 30% are using permanant method(tubectomy,. vasectomy)
3. The use of ineffective methods :resulted in many accidental pregnancies most of which¢¥ led to induced abortions. -Experience :rate of induced abortion is -38¡Æ% of women inter-viewed.
4. 25% of the last births(the-youngest child of each women surveyed) had received pre-natal care; moreover, most of them received only one or two visits after the second. trimester of pregnancy.
5. 85% of the last births were liter-ed lay mothers-in-law, or other relatives and neighbors. Only 15% were attended by -iI¢¥octors(14%) or mid=wives(l ).
6. Only 4.5% of thewomen receivied post=partum care after the last birth.
7. Immunization care -was relatively high, 70% for polio & OPT, 44% for measles and 5&% for BCG.
8. Among -all last deliveries, 18"% of the women had pregnancy complications and 9% of the women had -complications during ¢¥delivery.
9. 23% of the women perceived that they were sick within the last one month prior to the survey.
10. 62% of the women complained of one or more gynecological problems, such as irregular period, menstrual pain, itching, discharge, or feeling of prolapse.
11. Child morbidity is still prevalent, and 35% of all last children experienced one of more
episodes of illness, commonly fever and diarrhea, within the last one month.
12. 5% of all the newborns were found to have one or more problem soon after birth, such
as small size or no crying.
13. The women with medical risk factors in their previous pregnancy history had more complication related to the last pregnancy and delivery.
14. In examining the relationship between MCH services and the adverse outcome there is evidence that a lack of immunization is related to infant mortality, as was found that the risk group with lower immunization score is related to high infant mortality.
